BrightStars Program Focus: Fallon Memorial Preschool, Pawtucket

Fallon Memorial Preschool began its participation with BrightStars in March of 2016 as a 1-star program.  In less than two years Fallon has witnessed many positive changes and has increased their star rating to 4 Stars.

Fallon has six (6) preschool classrooms; three (3) classrooms are state-funded and four (4) are integrated.  All classrooms maintain a play-based learning approach and all follow the guidelines for the state’s Comprehensive Early Childhood Education (CECE) Standards.

Fallon Memorial uses Creative Curriculum to guide their instruction and Teaching Strategies Gold (TSG) data to inform their planning for individual students.  When asked why they decided to apply to increase to a higher star rating, Donna Sawyer answered “I saw how hard the teacher teams worked and (I) knew their dedication could definitely earn (the school) a higher star level”.  When Donna became the coordinator she wanted Fallon to be recognized for all of their hard work.

Being a part of BrightStars has encouraged Fallon Memorial to continuously improve.  The staff is always reaching for higher standards and have used their evaluations to celebrate their successes and work on their needs. Donna conveyed that every teacher team is committed to working hard to continuously improve their program for the children and the families they serve.

The program reports that by January 2018 every teacher at Fallon will have completed all suggested training on the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS), including Implementing a Standards Based Classroom, a training which helps early childhood professionals to use the RIELDS to increase program quality and support children to develop skills necessary to succeed in school.

Fallon Memorial Preschool also seeks to maintain the high Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) scores it receives by frequently seeking out professional development opportunities in all noted areas.  Staff collaborates with each other to share best practices.   The school has made significant facility improvements to increase the safety of their playground area.  They have also purchased many new materials to align with ECERS recommendations. The most recent classroom assessments observed many indicators of high quality programming, such as a strong commitment to outdoor play.  Children play outside every day, unless there is active precipitation or a weather advisory.  In addition, classrooms demonstrated a positive connection between conducting an efficient program structure and strong language and reasoning in the classroom.

Congratulations to the staff at Fallon Memorial Preschool for all of their hard work and dedication to improving the lives of the young children in their community.
