The Use of Tablets for Program Assessments

You may have seen BrightStars staff using tablets while conducting an Environment Rating Scale (ERS) assessment at your program.

BrightStars began using portable tablets in May 2015 to conduct ERS assessments. The Branagh ERS Data System allows BrightStars staff to conduct ECERS-R, ITERS-R, FCCERS-R and SACERS assessments using a lightweight tablet. The tablets will help BrightStars look at Environment Rating Scale data in many ways, including giving us the opportunity to identify the most common areas where support is needed.

In general, the use of the tablets will not have any significant impact on the assessment experience for staff. Staff may continue to use paper in certain circumstances and whether the tablet or paper is used the tool being used in the classroom will remain the same. The tablets have cameras, however BrightStars staff will not ever take identifying pictures of staff or children. Any pictures taken would be for BrightStars’ internal use only (for example, to identify an unfamiliar piece of playground equipment.)

If you have questions about the use of tablets please contact Kelly Brennan, Manager of Program Assessment at kbrennan@RIAEYC.org or 401-739-6100, ext. 311.
